American Kennel Club Rescinding Petland Agreement
UPDATE:
AKC - Petland THE DEAL FELL THROUGH!!!!!!!!!!
At the September Delegates Meeting AKC reported that we had reached an agreement with Petland in order to facilitate the registration of
dogs that are already AKC registrable.

AKC's Board of Directors and management believed that this agreement would have helped to further the mission of the AKC. Promoting responsible dog ownership to new puppy owners, implementing our care and conditions policies, and exposing more dog owners to AKC educational programs and services would have had even greater reach.
In the past few weeks we have received many comments about this
agreement, both positive and negative. We have listened to the
concerns and because this issue has become so divisive, we believe it
is in the best interest of our sport and the American Kennel Club not
to go forward with this initiative.

Purebred fanciers, pet owners and members of the rescue community seeking a dissolution of the agreement between the American Kennel Club and Petland stores that encourage the sale of pets through retail stores.
We, the undersigned, demand that the American Kennel Club rescind any and all agreements with Petland Stores as it pertains to the sale of puppies to be registered with the AKC.
We find that the AKC's own insistence of its members to be 'responsible breeders' and to adhere to a 'strict code of conduct' to be in direct conflict with this agreement with Petland Stores.
The continued sale of puppies through pet retailers such as Petland continues to do harm to the breed by promoting over population, contributing to the strain on the already over burdened rescue programs and fails many times to produce 'well bred' dogs suitable as pets or deserving of registration with the AKC.
Furthermore, we demand that the AKC refrain from entering any other agreements with any pet retailer that does not hold to the highest standard of the breeding and care of dogs as determined by the AKC's own standards.
As responsible and reputable breeders and owners, we try to uphold the standards set by the American Kennel Club. To endorse the sale of puppies at a pet retail store would lower those standards and diminish the goals we have achieved in the betterment of our dogs.
